Here’s my tips to starting a podcast. 🎤🏁

Podcasts are a great new business tool, but don’t do it for the likes or the listens, do it for the connections and the deep learnings.

THAT is the magic of podcasts.

A few years ago I had a (award winning!) podcast with Harriet Minter and Natalie Campbell MBE MIH that became a live radio show. We knew nothing about podcasting when we started out around 2016 but we were lucky to get some some coaching and really valuable advice from Laurie Palacio. Some of the advice that stuck in my mind that I use for my podcast ‘the future of in-house creative leadership’ is:

Have some ‘furniture’ 🛋️
This is basically a structure that is the same each week but changes because of the topic or guest you have. Have a listen to your fav podcasts and you will see they have (or should have) a bit of a structure.

Record as if it is live 🎭
We did the podcast as if it was live because the goal was always to make it to a live radio show. In hindsight it makes it much easier because as soon as you think you can edit you start tripping over your words and so does your guest.

Don’t speak when the other person is speaking 🙊
When we chat in really life with each other we say ‘yea’ and ‘um’ a lot to agree with people and let them know we are listening. We also talk over each other a little bit too. Don’t do that on a podcast. There are some great industry podcasts out there that I just can’t listen too because of this.

Do it low fi to start with and you can always invest in the quality as you go.

And send the link to me when you are live and I will be your first subscriber 🤣✌️
